Endovenous Laser Treatment

Endovenous laser treatment is a minimally invasive alternative to the surgical stripping of the saphenous vein.

Endovenous means that the treatment is performed ‘within the vein’. Instead of removing the vein, Endovenous laser treatment involves permanently sealing and closing it in place. During treatment the skin on the inside of the knee is anesthetised, and a small laser fibre is inserted into the damaged vein. Pulses of light are administered into the vein and damage the walls, which causes the vein to collapse and seal shut. The procedure takes approximately an hour to perform and the patient can usually return to their regular activities on the same day.

Endovenous laser treatment is performed in-office under local anaesthesia.

The anaesthetic not only allows the procedure to be performed safely and painlessly, it also offers a range of benefits for the rest of the treatment. The anaesthetic that is located around the vein causes it to spasm and shrink down onto the laser so that it is in very close contact with the laser fibre. The anaesthetic also absorbs the residual heat from the laser which prevents thermal damage to the surrounding tissue.

Following the procedure a bandage or compression hose is placed on the treated leg. Patients are able to walk immediately after the procedure, and most individuals are able to return to work the next day. Endovenous Laser Treatment is approved for the treatment of the greater saphenous vein.

Does Endovenous Laser Treatment provide long term results?

Clinical trials have shown that Endovenous laser treatment has a particularly high success rate, more than almost any other large varicose vein treatment, both in the short and long term. The study showed that after two years, the treatment had a 99% success rate. After five years, it showed a 98% success rate. This particular treatment has a better suitability to large varicose veins, more than 6mm in diameter, that are straight and aren’t too close to the surface of the skin. Cost of treatment

Endovenous Laser Treatment is often used in conjunction with other techniques like ultrasound guided sclerotherapy or micro-phlebectomy. The first session generally lasts about 1 hour and requires subsequent visits.

Costs start at $2500 per leg for laser and local anaesthesia, and around $3000 if you need phlebectomy as well. Medicare rebates apply only for 1 procedure per day even if it does not make sense to do those treatments one after the other on different days.

Studies have shown that treatment success increases if more is done on the first day of treatment.
